PET LOSS SUPPORT

The purpose of Blessed Bonds is to help preserve the special connection between humans and their animal companions. There are the inevitable times, however, when the physical bonds are broken, because death takes our beloved buddies to the Rainbow Bridge. Each relationship is unique and irreplaceable, so its loss can leave us with an empty place in our hearts.

 "The death of a beloved animal friend, whether furred, feathered or otherwise attired, whether a creature great or small, represents a very deep and significant loss to the loving human companion." ----The Chicago Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) brochure

Dr. Harper co-presents a seminar on "Surviving Burnout" at the bi-annual "No More Homeless Pets" conferences with Faith Maloney, sponsored by the Best Friends Animal Society. She facilitates the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA)'s Pet Loss Support Group, WINGS, which meets the first Wednesday of every month at the CVMA office, 100 Tower Drive Suite 234 in BURR RIDGE at 7:30pm. She is a member of the Chicago-land Stray Cat Coalition and PSYETA (Psychologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Her articles on preventing burnout in animal welfare caregivers have been published in the Chicago-land Tails Magazine and PSYETA (Psychologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals newsletter.

The CVMA sponsors a Pet Loss Help Line and Support Group for grieving owners.

Belle
(Written June 4, 1998)

I believe you are an angel, sent to me from heaven above;
To bring peace and happiness, and show us the depth of love.

As a therapist assistant, you took your job to heart;
And helped to heal so many,
Who felt their lives were torn apart.

Clients of different ages, even teens with "nothing to say."

Would warm up to you so quickly,
and then talk the hour away.

Every new cat that came, for a visit or to stay;
Was reassured with your kisses and cuddles that everything would be okay.

You really loved your Cat Vet, purring with each trip back;
Gaining all the love and respect of all the vet pets; with Sir Lancelot leading the pack!

Your amazing will to live, got you miraculously through so much!
You just knew that there were still so many lives left to touch.

Love bites, nudges and head-butts,
and wisdom I can't begin to measure;
Your knowing, soulful blue eyes, I'll always remember and treasure.

I know you completed your earthy stay,
with the highest honors and an "A+."
And like all the other angels, when your mission is finished you must...

Return to your home above, where I know you majestically await;
To greet me with that special "Belle-nudge" as you open heaven's gate.

Foxi
June 28, 1988 - December 24, 2001

Much too free for a poem. Nicely stated — Fiercely Independent.
In other words, "Oppositional disorder." When we called her, she ran the other way. Halloween witches and masks, doorbells & hoses could only trick her a short while. She wised up — and was off and running again.

 Known for having....

  • A Passion for the great outdoors.
  • Lying in the sun.
  • Sniffing for a chipmunk.
  • Rolling in something really smelly.
  • Drinking water while lying down after a long sweaty run

A Calling To Guard Us

  • Against anyone and anything.

  • Circling an unsuspecting neighbor, a strange noise, Mikey.
  • Cats at the window.
  • Imagined cats at the window (To get Lukas riled up).
  • A bark you couldn't miss (or quiet down, either).

A Love of Life

  •  A nurturing mother to her pups.

  •  Best buds to Linda and Mario.
  •  But especially her favorite person — TINA!!!!!
  • Who gave her frosted cookies, warm chicken and rice, walks in the yard and the front room, special time in the laundry room. She so proudly showed off her puppies to her.

A Tough Disposition

Would not be held back by "Jake abuse" or eye injuries, epilepsy, kidney problems, high blood pressure, torn ligaments and casts... cancer, falling out of bed, on occasion. Relentless. Also, known to give a bite or two, now and then to a vet.

And Foxi's other side —

  • A Gentle Soul "Sweetie Pie."

  • Always herself — no need to please.
  • Bed buddy.
  • My December companion - a happy traveler.
  • Sensing a broken heart — lending a paw, a snuggly hug.
  • Kissing a tear-stained face.
  • Always a Free Spirit.
  • I can only imagine her DELIGHT as she now runs and guards and loves in a great big adventuresome yard that goes on forever.
  • There she goes — The Fox — The Foxi of all Foxi's!

Lessons From Felix
 (1979-2002)

Such a wise old soul.
Who taught us so much,
Not with words
But with his own loving touch.

  • Food is always GREAT--regardless of the number of teeth you have.

  • Seniority mush count — oldest gets the attention first, and then again, last.

  • The more LOVE you give out, the more you have to give.

  • You can adapt to new surroundings at any age.

  • Life is what YOU decide to make of it.
  • There are always people to love and be loved by.
  • A hug should be a full-body experience.
  • If you want to melt a heart, wrap your arms around the neck and hold on tight.
  • Head butts are to be dealt out daily.
  • Life begins again at age 88 (or so).
  • A cute face can get you everything.
  • It's never too late to make a HUGE difference in others' lives and the world.
  • The more you love, the more you will be loved and MISSED LIKE CRAZY!

Winston

Winston or Winnie, my head-butting pal;
Was especially fond of a special gal.
"Winnie", she called him, "my good-lookin' man; Marry me, Win, I'm your Number 1 fan!"

Winston and Ashley --what a pair!

He so handsome — She so fair.
They had a furever love;
Now he is her angel above.

Winston's meow was one of a kind;

A bellow like that is hard to find.

He enjoyed work, play, and car rides, too;
And one or two snuggles just wouldn't do!

Always kind to new friends in town,

His presence assured them that mice wouldn't be found.

But while visitors peacefully slept in the bed;
Winston would place himself upon the guest's head.

(A small price to pay; to keep mice away).

For six wonderful years we enjoyed Winston here;

Although much too short, I'll always hold that time dear.

A Blessed Bond

Blackie loved me with all of his heart;
When our eyes first met– right from the start..

His love only grew stronger as time went by;
No problems with intimacy for this little guy!

Though many enjoyed his love and affection;
He and I were blessed with a special connection.

I wish he was given a longer earthly stay;
My heart longs for "my little boy" every day.

But I know that his love will continue to go on; as it strengthens my commitment to the human-animal bond.

By helping other people and pets stay together; I can keep Blackie's spirit alive forever.

IGGI DESERVES A GREAT TRIBUTE!

But it’s hard to write with a hole in my heart; so this will have to do for now:

Iggi boy --What a guy!  Indescribably  wonderful.

Tough but gentle; determined and willful, yet loving and thoughtful. Independent, but accepting of his reliance on others for care and so very trusting.

A dog of few words ----but when he TALKED, we sure LISTENED!

So grateful, he loved his friends. Funny, witty, a real character with HUGE character.

A Master teacher:

 He taught us how to make the most of  life – disabilities, limitations and all:  Going with the flow a day at a time… right up to his last breath (in my arms).

 How we face challenges does not create soul; it reveals the soul.

 What a soul we saw! And now………………so painfully MISS.

LUKAS
(March 27, 1991 – July 14, 2006)

I wished for one more day with you;
Knowing that only one would never do.
To enjoy all the many facets of YOU
……

A topnotch guard at the bedroom gate;
A bedtime snuggler—Absolutely First Rate!
A barker –Oh, Yes! Sometimes without a break.

 Very perceptive – “The Pook” didn’t miss a trick;
And what a comforter to those who were sad or sick!
Sometimes – getting carried away with a lick.

Determined to have his way and speak his mind;
Socks and stuffed toys were his favorite find!
He wouldn’t budge from the refrigerator door;
When he still had a taste for a little bit more!

He danced with me – He danced with life;
Fully embracing each day as it came.
So in honor of my beloved Lukas boy;
I will try harder to do the same!

BATMAN
May, 1993 - June, 2005

Batman, also known as Batty, the Batter, or the Battyboy was a Great Guy!

About a week old  --found in a box with his Mom, Jade and siblings Maverick and Sundance – one might have thought he was a little bat with tucked in wings

Reserved, polite, a little shy. HUGE loving eyes, with a quiet little MEOW at times. Liked to hide under his buddy bed. Bravely fought a cancerous face tumor.

Never a problem or misdeed, got along with everybody, cats and people alike. Never asked for much- But gave us ALOT – by just being himself – The One and Only: The Batman!
